These are terms I encounter and look up in my general work as a translator. The main purpose is to provide an easy reference for myself in order to write the special diacritical marks in HTML, and secondarily to recall the meanings of words. I am not a Sanskrit scholar, and there are better resources out there than this.
Some notes on HTML codes for transliterating Sanskrit.
Here are vowels with lines on top of them:
Ā = Ā
ā = ā
Ē = Ē
ē = ē
Ī = Ī
ī = ī
Ō = Ō
ō = ō
Ū = Ū
ū = ū
Consonants with lines on top:
ñ = ñ (not really a line, but a tilde)
Letters with dots above or below:
There is a combining diacritical symbol for a dot above a letter, another symbol for a dot below. In some applications the dot is placed in line with the symbol, but in others it is behind or ahead.
A dot above is the symbol ˙. Below are examples:
a a˙ — b b˙ — c c˙ —
d d˙ — e e˙ — f f˙ —
g g˙ — h h˙ — i i˙ —
j j˙ — k k˙ — l l˙ —
m m˙ — n n˙ — o o˙ —
p p˙ — q q˙ — r r˙ —
s s˙ —t t˙ — u u˙ —
v v˙ — w w˙ — x x˙ —
y y˙ — z z˙ —
A dot below is the symbol ̣. Below are examples:
a ạ — b ḅ — c c̣ —
d ḍ — e ẹ — f f̣ —
g g̣ — h ḥ — i ị —
j j̣ — k ḳ — l ḷ —
m ṃ — n ṇ — o ọ —
p p̣ — q q̣ — r ṛ —
s ṣ —t ṭ — u ụ —
v ṿ — w ẉ — x x̣ —
y ỵ — z ẓ —
